Albion Knots

Description

The Albion (England) knot otherwise known as a hawthorn brooch is an old British custom of cutting a knotted or branched twig of hawthorn, carving it into a pin and wearing it as a brooch pinned to your clothing. Many Albion knots still have the bark left on. This set of three are non-traditional with the bark taken off. The largest is carved into a heron, the middle one is carved with two birds and the smallest is carved with a crescent moon and a star.

Albion knots are worn for good fortune, protection and to show loyalty to nature and the fairy-folk. Hawthorn is a wood who's properties are thought to chase away depression and it's protection properties are obvious since this shrub is covered in sharp thorns hence the shape of the pin.

Hiya - the biggest one is 3 inches long, the others were around 2". They're supposed to be nondescript charms poked through a sweater or scarf. They're fun to make as you can carve them into anything, or just leave a knobby end.

Slainte! :horns:
