I made this cane for my grandmother as both her birthday and Christmas present. It is a birch walking cane with raised carving of poppies, forget-me-nots and black-eyed susans. Nanny is an avid gardner so I know she'll like the flowers. I painted them with coloured woodstains which are great, it's like watercolours for wood! I sanded the whole cane smooth as a baby's bottom, then I am going to varnish it (the weather finally warmed up enough to to it outside). I had some setbacks making it as it turns out I'm very allergic to birch! I had to buy a medical mask in order to sand the cane.
This is lovely, and the wood's gorgeous! I was just wondering if you make your own stains, or buy them? I never usually colour or varnish wood, but I've just got a few small bits of holly and it's so beautifully white
Thanks for the compliment! I buy them, they are water based eco-friendly stains with no chemicals so I feel comfortable using them. Water based stains raise the woodgrain so you have to sand again after staining - but only lightly. I do honestly use and mix them like water colours and have gotten some pretty neat results as you can see above.
Your colors are wonderful - I'm so sorry to hear about your allergy, though, being allergic to your media is about the worst thing that can happen to you. I hope the wood was dry so your hands didn't react!
Gorgeous, gorgeous work, I hope you keep on with it!
I already told you how beautiful this is . I'd appreciate if you took more pictures, so I can just sit in front of the computer and stare at it for hours. Maybe it will then materialize in here!
Gorgeous, gorgeous work, I hope you keep on with it!
I think you'd need a more manly cane Thomas
