Artist's Comments

Here are some carved pregnant bellies that I've recently made from willow. They are about 3 inches tall and are pyrographed with delicate henna designs. These are fertility and childbirth charms. Willow is thought to bring luck and ease in childbirth, and a woman would wear one or carry one with her if she wanted to get pregnant or was already pregnant. I sanded them with all the grades of sandpaper down to the finest I have to make them very touchable, then I rubbed with lemon oil and beeswax so they smell delicious.

Lovely work. They remind me of the Venus of Willendorf, which is one of my favourite prehistoric sculptures!

I'm lucky enough to own a plaster cast of the original work, and it fits snugly into the palm of my hand, which I think these would too!

Cheers,
K.

These are beautiful, do you sell them?

I'm expecting my 4th baby this November (in theory, I don't think he's going to wait that long though) and I'd be extremely interested in one of the childbirth ones...perhaps a commission?
