The Cailleach Coat

Description

This coat is made in honour of the Cailleach, the Celtic Goddess of winter… and yes, it is a winter coat! This magical coat is 100% wool made from re-purposed (recycled) fabrics and is my own pattern. The interior is thick undyed woven wool for the Cailleach’s plain tartan which represents snow. The exterior is wool suiting fabric in a beautiful shade of indigo, I chose this colour because the Cailleach’s skin is said to be blue.

The buttons are made from deer antler that I recycled from a friend’s stash - the toggle clasps are custom made for the coat. I chose deer antler buttons because it was said that the deer were The Cailleach's cattle - she looked after them. The coat is hand embroidered with the Cailleach’s one big blue eye on the hood and a delicate triple spiral symbol on the back. The two outside pockets and the one inside hidden pocket are lined with lovely blue & purple Thai silk. I also hand embroidered a red clothing label - had to add my signature touch of red to give the coat magical life. It will be blessed and consecrated and is coming with me to the festivals this summer.

Thank you! I still have it, the fabric ended up being troublesome and unravelly if that's a word! It needs some fixin' up.
